CoinFund President Highlights Regulatory Clarity as Key to Crypto Adoption

Liu Wenjing
Christopher Perkins, President of CoinFund and former Wall Street Fin. He thinks regulatory clarity is necessary for the next wave of crypto adoption. Perkins has once again expressed optimism about the Biden administration’s cryptocurrency regulation, calling it “principled” and “coordinated.” He explains that without certainty there must be rules to allow greater innovation and investment in the crypto burgeoning space.
Perkins views as one of the biggest hurdles the lack of a U.S. taxonomy for digital assets. He argues that understanding what needs to be decentralized and why it should be regulated that way is crucial for encouraging innovation.
The very act of understanding informs policy. Hopefully we get to a place where we clarify what is decentralized, what is not, and how it’s regulated. - Christopher Perkins
He likens proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchains to legacy finance indexes. He emphasizes that since each layer-1 has its own benchmark rate, this can theoretically open the door to a world of layer-1-specific fixed-income products.
Perkins called out the heights that the meme coin market, once worth as much as $40 billion in 2021, reached. He contrasted this number with the $30 billion venture capital market. He cautioned that the meme coin market has room to grow and can grow even larger – up to $2 trillion. More importantly, he said, CoinFund’s investment philosophy was not to go for hype but to find real value.
We don't like to invest on narrative. We like to invest on fundamentals. - Christopher Perkins
CoinFund’s investment philosophy is based on empowering talented founders in every vertical. Perkins highlighted the importance of utility and understanding the value derived from it, citing examples like autonomous lawn robots powered by precise location data from DePIN networks.
It's all about utility. It’s all about understanding the value that is derived from that utility. - Christopher Perkins
Additionally, he pushed into the idea that institutions preferred modular ecosystems, for the control and customization it provides. Perkins explained that CoinFund doesn’t take a hard line “monolithic versus modular” stance.
We're not monolithic versus modular maxis. - Christopher Perkins
Perkins ascribes the future hopes for crypto adoption to a need for clarity on the regulatory, technological, and strategic levels. To illustrate the degree of regulatory uncertainty right now, he availed himself of a metaphor.
What we're confronted with right now… is glitter clarity. - Christopher Perkins
Third, he stressed the importance of these asset classes to a global audience in terms of their accessibility.
you can't win the game if you don't know the rules. - Christopher Perkins
He also highlighted the accessibility of these asset classes to a global audience.
Anyone with an internet connection around the world can access these asset classes. - Christopher Perkins
