Ethereum's Next Billion: Trust, Tech, & Real-World Impact

Lim Qiaoyun
Ethereum is a symbol of new ideas in the digital world. It’s rapidly spreading its tentacles further afield than cryptocurrency. Now, experts are using its underlying blockchain technology to address urgent global issues. Beyond this advancement, it builds confidence and improves experiences for users in multiple industries. Ethereum is proving its worth to help build a more equitable and sustainable future on and off its platform for everyone. It does this through various efforts, including the Next Billion Fellowship.
Building Trust in Journalism and Media
In a time where misinformation is rampant and trust in traditional media channels is eroding, Ethereum provides a shining example. The Ethereum blockchain, and other similar technologies, are being tested to make journalism more transparent and trustworthy. Projects are emerging that leverage blockchain to secure content, verify sources, and create more sustainable business models for news organizations.
Ideas like the “Ethereum Journalism Trust” and other blockchain-oriented solutions are an encouraging first step in that direction. The Civil network, an initiative to support independent journalism, uses blockchain technology to help build a healthier and more transparent media ecosystem. This cutting edge platform has been all the rage. That outreach was met with incredible demand—around 600 organizations have applied to launch newsrooms on Civil, of which 40% hail from outside the borders of the United States. Blockchain technology can provide a tamper-proof digital chain of custody for the critical metadata that journalists and media companies depend on every single day. Because it’s immutable, it makes editing and storage tamperproof. This added security and transparency can add a much-needed layer of public trust back into the complex media landscape.
Empowering Change: Next Billion Fellowship Projects
The Next Billion Fellowship is leading the charge in demonstrating Ethereum’s positive real-world impact. Through this program, projects have been funded that use blockchain technology to tackle some of today’s most pressing problems—from saving endangered species to increasing social resilience. The projects are as varied as they are impactful and represent the incredible versatility of the Ethereum blockchain.
Projects and Impact
- Sharfy Adamantine's Gainforest: This project connects climate finance directly to local conservation efforts and data, enabling environmental stewardship through transparent and verifiable transactions. This ensures that funds reach the intended recipients and that conservation efforts are accurately tracked and measured.
- Guo Liu's Billboard Protocol: This initiative transforms digital advertising spaces into community-controlled assets, allowing for decentralized publishing and empowering local communities to control their narratives. This model challenges the traditional advertising landscape, giving communities a voice and a stake in the content being displayed.
- Valeriia Panina's Volya: Volya documents the intersection of war, technology, and social resilience in Ukraine, showcasing crypto's evolution from an emergency tool to a paradigm of trust. This project highlights the role of blockchain in providing secure and transparent financial assistance during times of crisis, as well as its potential to document and preserve critical historical information.
- Teodor Petricevic's UNDP Blockchain Initiative: This initiative creates a mapping of projects based on Ethereum within the UN system, promoting trust and coordination among various stakeholders. By providing a comprehensive overview of blockchain-based initiatives within the UN, this project facilitates collaboration and knowledge sharing, ultimately leading to more effective and impactful programs.
- Lefteris Arapakis' Enaleia: Enaleia transforms Mediterranean fishing communities into environmental stewards through a blockchain-tracked supply chain for ocean plastic. This innovative approach incentivizes fishermen to collect plastic waste from the ocean, which is then tracked and traced using blockchain technology, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the supply chain.
This is just a small selection of projects highlighting the power of Ethereum. They address pressing global issues and help lay the groundwork for a more just and sustainable world.
Ethereum's Commitment to Sustainability
Ethereum has shown their commitment to sustainability by transitioning over to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. This transformative upgrade—which developers call “The Merge”—has cut the environmental impact of the network by 99.95% and energy consumption by more than 99%. The Ethereum network is currently operating on close to 48% sustainable energy. Of this, 32% is from renewable sources and 16% from nuclear power, with wind in the lead as the largest renewable source. Thanks to The Merge, Ethereum’s carbon footprint is now over 99.99% smaller, creating an almost net-zero technology.
Ethereum has created innovative, new methodologies to measure and project its GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions. These resources provide a powerful window into its historical emissions debt and support current and future emission estimates. Providing this transparency allows the Ethereum community to make informed decisions about their environmental impact. It’s a powerful tool for ongoing improvements in our own sustainability practices. Ethereum's transition to a PoS model has significantly reduced its energy consumption, as it no longer relies on energy-intensive mining activities. This makes Ethereum well positioned for long-term growth in a future that will increasingly rely on a sustainable and efficient digital economy.
Expanding Trust and Security Across Industries
From tracking prescription drugs to forest product certifications to verifying educational credentials, Ethereum’s blockchain technology is having an impact far beyond journalism and environmental sustainability.
Use Cases
- Supply Chain Management: Blockchain provides a transparent and tamper-proof record of transactions, building trust with users by tracking products from origin to consumer.
- Voting Systems: Secure and transparent voting systems can be created using blockchain, ensuring fair elections and reducing the risk of fraud.
- Healthcare: Blockchain can securely store and manage patient data, improving data privacy and reducing the risk of data breaches.
- Identity Verification: Blockchain-based identity verification systems can provide a secure and reliable way to verify identities, reducing the risk of identity theft and fraud.
- Cybersecurity: Blockchain can enhance cybersecurity by providing a decentralized and tamper-proof platform for storing and managing security credentials and data.
- Data Storage: Blockchain-based data storage solutions can provide a secure and decentralized way to store data, reducing the risk of data loss and censorship.

Ethereum instills confidence through transparency, security and immutability. These qualities make it an especially powerful tool for industries that seek to improve trust and transparency, while increasing efficiency.
The Future of Ethereum: Interoperability and Beyond
Going forward, as Ethereum develops in more complex ways, interoperability will surely be key to its ongoing growth and adoption. Robust interactivity between Layer 1 (L1) and Layer 2 (L2) solutions galvanizes developers to build more scalable and sophisticated applications. This development will further open the floodgates to what we can achieve with blockchain technology.
Ethereum's journey is far from over. Ethereum is an ever-evolving, robust ecosystem with a vibrant community of inventive projects reaching for the future. It’s poised to deeply impact the future of technology and society. By putting sustainability, transparency, and user empowerment front and center, Ethereum is leading the charge toward a more equitable and decentralized world.
