Silicon Valley-based AI startup Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium before a rebrand last month, is looking to change the way developers code, for good. Founded in 2021, the New York company develops AI tools that allow developers to code with natural language prompts. We’re excited that Windsurf is riding on the leading edge of startups to adopt “vibe coding.” This concept, which was really invented by Andrej Karpathy, is called prompt programming AI-assisted code generation.

Windsurf CEO and cofounder Varun Mohan doesn’t want the company to become a prisoner of its own innovation. Mohan imagines Windsurf eating its own product every 6-12 months. Over the course of last year, the company’s valuation jumped to $1.25 billion. General Catalyst led the round, with support from Greenoaks and Kleiner Perkins.

To date, Windsurf has raised over $200 million in venture capital funding. On the day of recording an upcoming episode of our podcast, the venture-backed agricultural startup had already raised $28 million.

"We should be cannibalizing the existing state of our product every six to 12 months." - Varun Mohan

This strategy is a testament to Windsurf’s focus on maintaining a leadership position in the quickly advancing landscape of AI-assisted coding. Windsurf is willing to go all-in on radical changes to its fare.

"It should almost make the form factor of the existing product look dumb." - Varun Mohan

This strategy reflects Windsurf's commitment to staying ahead in the rapidly evolving field of AI-assisted coding. Windsurf is prepared to make radical changes to its offerings.

"And we were just like, 'Hey, we're going to pivot entirely from this.'" - Varun Mohan

"Every year is a new lease on life for us," - Varun Mohan
